Destination Canada Releases August Tourism Snapshot

VANCOUVER — Destination Canada’s (DC) latest Tourism Snapshot shows continued tourism growth for August 2019, with 3.33-million international overnight arrivals (up 7.8 per cent), marking the highest level for August since 2002. This also marked the first time arrivals from markets other than the U.S. breached the one-million mark for August.

Year-to-date August 2019, international overnight arrivals surpassed the 15-million threshold one month earlier than ever before, as arrivals from long-haul markets reached a new peak level of 4.99 million and arrivals of U.S. residents was the highest achieved since 2004.

Four of DC’s target markets also achieved new monthly arrivals peaks for August, including China (up 1.2 per cent), France (up 13.1 per cent), Mexico (up 17.3 per cent) and India (11.1 per cent). Australia was the only target market that saw declines for the month, with a decrease of 3.5 per cent.

Amid a general contraction in overnight arrivals from the Destination Canada markets in the Asia-Pacific region, South Korea was the lone market to increase in air and sea arrivals (up 6.1 per cent) in August 2019.
